What’s more part of Texas history than BBQ and what’s more part of Baytown history than Daniel’s Meat Market and Smokehouse?
Our founder, George Daniel, utilized a small building that once housed a lumber yard and saw mill, turning it into a local favorite to be passed down for generations. Our location began in the times of World War II as Prince’s Lumber Yard. Our current building was the offices that held the young ladies who managed the orders and the books. In 1963 Mr. Daniel turned the building into a successful meat market, grocery store and lunch deli. George operated the meat market with such success that at one point he had 11 butchers on staff. Local citizens could stop by and pick up their weekly meat selections, their last minute deli items and a warm lunch. The concept took off and Daniel’s became known around Baytown as a favorite. As time crept into a new millennium, George passed the business on to his son Jimmy. Jimmy carried the local tradition on by serving warm meals, and fresh meat for many years. When his health began declining he did not want to see his family’s hard work remain as just a memory in the town he grew up in. He passed the business on to his dear friend Jack Adcox who has kept Daniel’s traditions alive.
Daniel’s Meat Market is still creating hundreds of pounds of house special Reo Sausage, and boudin each week to serve along side their warm plates and accompany raw meat purchases. And thanks to a community that loves and supports a local landmark, Daniel’s is expanding and moving across the street to a building that can welcome more customers and offer more selections of meat than ever before. We would not be where we are without the support of our hometown.
